BGL celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month and remains dedicated to the fight for true equality, inclusion, and justice. – Technologist

This June, Brown, Goldstein & Levy proudly celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month.  We commemorate those who courageously resisted police harassment and persecution through the Stonewall Uprising and honor generations of LGBTQ+ people who have continued the fight for equality, inclusion, and justice for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Although the law has evolved in many ways, prejudices remainand new laws targeting transgender youth are unfortunately on the rise. When lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other individuals experience discrimination, BGL attorneys draw on decades of experience in civil rights cases to provide advocacy and protection. We represent LGBTQ+ clients in all areas of the law. We have pursued cases on behalf of students whose schools censor LGBTQ+ content and on behalf of employees whose employers refuse to extend health insurance coverage to their same-sex spouses. We are also proud to partner with other organizations to advocate for LGBTQ+ equality in the law and to shape policy.

We are proud of our work with FreeState Justice to provide pro bono representation to trans men and women seeking name and legal gender marker changes, asylum protection, and legal representation in cases involving employment and health care discrimination.

BGL continues to actively advocate on behalf of LGBTQ clients. In April 2023, we filed Chelsea Gilliam, et al., v. Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, et al., a case in which we represent transgender women who are or have been incarcerated in men’s correctional facilities, where they have experienced sexual assault, denial of hormone treatment, and ongoing harassment. In December 2023,we were proud to obtain a temporary restraining order (TRO) for one currently incarcerated client, Chloe Grey, requiring, among other things, that prison officials video record each administration of hormone treatment to ensure timely and consistent provision of necessary medical care. We also recently obtained a federal district court victory on behalf of a married gay employee who challenged Catholic Relief Services’ withdrawal of health insurance benefits for his husband.
